Solitary thyroid nodule approach (radiological and surgical follow-up after resection), a practical study at Al-Mowasat University Hospital

Article scientifique 2024 Anglais

Résumé

Abstract Background Thyroid nodules are common and can be benign or malignant. Solitary thyroid nodules (STN) have a high probability of being malignant and must be properly labeled for their correct management. Methods and materials: In this study, we analyzed the data of our departments over a period of six months. All patients who had a single thyroid nodule were included, and multiple nodules were excluded. The sample was collected in the Department of Radiology and General Surgery at Al-Mowasat University Hospital, based on the findings of the echograph. Results There were 125 cases of STN detected radiologically. By pathological anatomy, the percentage of presence of malignancy was 20%, the most common of which was papillary carcinoma 55%. The percentage of involvement of the right and left lobes was equal, the size of 1.5-3 cm was the highest at 67%, the percentage of presence of calcifications was 34. %, and the most common symptom associated with the lesion is goiter, accompanied by enlarged phlegm nodules at a rate of 46%, and according to the TIRADS classification, the most common is the fourth classification at 43%. Conclusion The single thyroid nodule in our study has a low probability of malignancy, echocardiography has a high degree of prognostication and patients should be further evaluated by ultrasound and biopsy.
