Religion and The Crisis of Women’s Political Representation in Nigeria

Over the years, it has been widely acknowledged that women constitute an oppressed, exploited, and underprivileged group in the third world countries. Nonetheless, women’s contribution to the material and human development of the society, particularly in Africa nay Nigeria, is numerous and endless. This paper examines the intersection of religion and women’s political representation in Nigeria. Despite constitutional guarantees of equality, women remain underrepresented in political leadership. Religion, alongside cultural and socioeconomic factors, plays a critical role in shaping this crisis. The study explores how religious doctrines, practices, and institutions influence gender roles, political participation, and leadership opportunities for women, while also highlighting pathways for reform. This paper sets to address the problem of how women can be encouraged to influence religious and political decisions and also probe the level of achievement women can attain to qualify them for certain portfolios in religious and political leadership in Nigeria. Existing scholarly works investigates religion as a ‘stronghold’ upon which women’s role has been subjugated because the readings of religious meanings into the conception, understanding and workability of African public sphere accounts for certain societal ideologies. The paper employs a historical, theoretical and socio religious approach in its methodology. Findings from this study shows that the crisis of women’s political representation in Nigeria is deeply tied to religious hermeneutics, patriarchal structures, and colonial legacies. Hence, this study highlights the need for inclusive interpretations of religious texts, recognizing the cultural context and original intent. It argues that African Christianity and Islam can promote women's leadership by reinterpreting patriarchal texts through a gender-inclusive lens, recognizing women's contributions in scripture and tradition. It can also challenge colonial and patriarchal structures that limit women's roles and Embrace education and empowerment as key to women's leadership.
