Jesus Christ and Insecurity in First Century Palestine as a Model for Churches in Nigeria

Jesus Christ was born into an insecure Palestinian society. The New Testament Gospel accounts provide the real-life situation that constituted insecurity in first-century Palestine. King Herod’s coordinated infanticide exercise, which targeted Jesus, is a case. New Testament scholars have not paid attention to the aspect of insecurity in first-century Palestine and how the Nigerian church and the larger society can apply insights that can be elicited from the text. This study employs qualitative, interdisciplinary methodological approach that integrates biblical exegesis, historical analysis, and contextual theology. This study aims to explore insights from Jesus’ life and his teachings regarding how the church can handle insecurity and mayhem in Nigeria. The findings reveal that avoidance and consistent preparedness can be used to tackle insecurity. Likewise, assisting victims of insecurity should be the ethos of the church.
