Orientation: The role of the human resource development (HRD) practitioner within Industry 4.0 holds great potential for directing the entire organisation and better preparing the workforce for the upcoming technological advancements. Research purpose: This research aimed to explore the role of the HRD practitioner within Industry 4.0 in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality by determining the constraining and contributing factors and the future expectations. Motivation for the study: The role of HRD practitioners in South African municipalities within Industry 4.0 is unclear and needs investigation. Research approach/design and method: The research employed a qualitative approach, engaging with 11 participants from the Municipality. Data were collected, and thematic analysis was utilised to analyse the data. Main findings: The main findings from the research were in line with research from previous studies. For example: Working in silos, Budget constraints, Change management, Delay in process, Lack of resources, Talent management, to name a few. Practical/managerial implications: To understand what was expected of them and how they should train and develop employees, HRD practitioners identified their role within Industry 4.0. Several hindrances might affect the transition into Industry 4.0, like delays in the process, lack of support and budget constraints, to name a few. Failure to keep up with technological advancements will hinder smooth adaptation and employee training in Industry 4.0. Contribution/value-add: The study informs workers about their specific position and clarifies the role of HRD in the context of impending technological improvements.
