A study of the dual-eccycle strategy for: research practice partnerships in architecture

Design research is about the creation of new knowledge that develops both in academic research and in the practice. Research shows that neither theory-based nor practice-based knowledge alone is sufficient for producing knowledge practice. Authors emphasize that, knowledge practice is the product of the interaction between theory and action. Although a great deal is written about the dual goals of design research: the creation of knowledge and applying that knowledge through interaction (knowledge practice) to improve the practice. Little is known of how knowledge practice is created through the interaction between theory and experience, and how the interaction between these two, especially in architectural context, can transform knowledge to action. To answer these questions this article re-views the Dual-eccycle Model of knowledge producing, which has been developed over the past five years by our graduate programs of architecture. It was used and tested in several research practice collaboration projects conducted by the master-doctoral collaboration for educational purposes, improving learning and teaching practices. As more knowledge is now available both from empirical research and the literature, reviewing the case-studies produced by the graduate students using the dual-eccycle model is believed to be useful for better understanding how knowledge is produced. Producing knowledge practice should be studied from the view point of how it develops through the interaction between experience and theorization. In this article, a theoretical framework is developed which provides an analytical perspective on the contributions of the academic and the professional researchers working in collaboration. Against this framework, in-depth analysis of the research actors’ individual and collaborative roles is directed to not only improve understanding the process but also the mechanism of knowledge producing, the dual-eccycle model.
