Narrative review of the concepts, functions, components, and evaluation of housing environments in Nigeria

Résumé

This study provides a structured narrative mini-review of the concepts, functions, components, and evaluation of housing environments in Nigeria. It presents an overview of the role of housing in contributing to personal wellbeing, social cohesion, and sustainable urban growth. The study then reveals that the housing environment comprises housing unit characteristics, housing unit services, the location of housing, its management, and the socio-economic environment where dwelling units are located. The study identifies the subjective and objective approaches to evaluating housing environment and recommends a combination of subjective and objective approaches in order to achieve a better result. The major contribution of this study is the development of a framework for the subjective and objective evaluation of the housing environment in Nigeria.
