Financial Inclusion, Community Capacity Building, and Pro Wildlife Conservation Behaviour in the Northern Periphery of Dja Biosphere Reserve in the East Region of Cameroon

The study examined the contribution of financial inclusion and community capacity building on pro wildlife conservation behaviour among rural households at the Northern Periphery of Dja Biosphere Reserve in the East Region of Cameroon. Data elicited through the survey questionnaire administered on a sample of 279 households involved in the programme of conservation in the areas. The study used cluster sampling approach in grouping proximity villages into four zones and purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the households. The objectives of the study was achieved empirically using three stage maximum likelihood estimation techniques; factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. The results show that financial inclusion and community capacity building has a significant positive effect on pro wildlife conservation behaviour. The results equally indicated that financial inclusion has a significant effect on community capacity building. This means that a 1 unit increase in the level of financial inclusion will result to 43 units surged in the level of community capacity building and 30.2 units increase in the level of pro wildlife conservation behaviour. The findings also revealed that the effect of financial inclusion on pro wildlife conservation is mediated by community capacity building. The findings also had shown evidence of the moderation effect of gender on the link between financial inclusion and pro wildlife conservation behaviour. The findings suggest that financial inclusion and community capacity building nexus has the tendency to reduce the declined in wildlife stocks as it promotes friendly behaviour towards wildlife and its habitats. The study, therefore, recommends policies that support financial inclusion and community capacity building as essential for sustainable conservation owing to their ability in promoting pro wildlife conservation behaviour. he findings also recommend the integration of women as equal partner for sustainable conservation efforts.
