Workplace Diversity and Organizational Performance in Deposit Money Banks, Bayelsa State, Nigeria

Focusing on responsiveness in the deposit money institutions in Bayelsa State, the paper has analysed the empirical correlation between diversity in the workplace and organisational performance. The study population consisted of employees of the commercial banks operating in the state and was carried out with the help of a descriptive survey research technique. This cohort was used to group 80 employees who were selected randomly to take part in the survey. Primary data were collected by way of a standardised questionnaire that had a five-point Likert scale, indicating strongly agree to strongly disagree. The content validity of the instrument was ensured through expert assessment in organisational behaviour, and the instrument was tested through Cronbachs Alpha coefficient to find out its reliability; the outcome was found to be an acceptable value of 0.72. The data collected were coded and analyzed with the aid of the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 through inferential statistics methods, especially the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The results showed that ethnic diversity, gender diversity, and age diversity have a positive and statistically significant correlation with responsiveness in the deposit money banks in Bayelsa State. These findings suggest workplace diversity to be very effective in the performance and organisational responsiveness in the banking sector. In this way, the paper reaches a conclusion that an effective approach to enhancing service responsiveness in deposit money banks is to manage staff diversity effectively. To become more responsive and, at the same time, stay on par with organisational performance, it is recommended that the bank management should embrace inclusive diversity policies and practices.
