The Need for Leadership and Management Training for Catholic Priests in the Changing Spheres of South African Parish Life: “Back to school”

Article scientifique 2026 Anglais

Résumé

The Catholic curriculum for the priesthood mainly focuses on teaching the aspiring candidates about philosophy, theology, scripture, counselling, marriage counselling, and the like. Following ordination, most priests are assigned to a parish, and some may be asked by their diocese to continue their education in specialised studies. While fundamental to the ministerial priesthood, few studies address issues of practical administration, management, and leadership. However, Catholic priests need leadership education, particularly administrative and management development, to become more effective shepherds and administrators of parishes. Thus, as better-equipped priests, they can be role models rather than idolised or elitist leaders. The seminary curriculum also lacks issues around Ubuntu philosophies and engagement around decolonisation. For this reason, this article intends to explore the question of current seminary education and the formation of candidates for the priesthood to prepare them for ethically sound leadership and to become role models in ecclesial leadership. The focus of this paper is Southern Africa.
