A gender-based comparative analysis of food security amongst the beneficiaries of the land restitution in Limpopo province
Résumé
Despite several governmental interventions and land reform measures, food insecurity is still a persistent and multifaceted issue in South Africa. This study evaluated and compared the levels and drivers of household food security by gender amongst the beneficiaries of land restitution. The research was carried out in Limpopo Province specifically in Sekhukhune, Waterberg and Capricorn districts. A semi structured questionnaire was used to gather data from 200 beneficiaries utilizing stratified and simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using Stata/SE 15.0, employing summary statistics and multinomial logistic regression. Among the male beneficiaries, about 5% were food secure, 48% mildly food insecure, 46% moderately food insecure and 1% severely food insecure. For female beneficiaries, 1% were food secure, 46% mildly food insecure, 49% moderately food insecure and 4% severely food insecure. The key drivers of food security amongst the male beneficiaries incorporated age, source of income, dietary diversity score, agripreneurship, post settlement support and innovation technology. Alternatively, for female beneficiaries, only dietary diversity score and post settlement support were the main drivers. The study recommends the implementation of gender responsive interventions, strengthening post settlement support and trainings, promotion of agripreneurship, dietary diversity and nutrition programs to enhance sustainable food security among land restitution beneficiaries.
