Valorization of phosphate mine waste rock as alternative aggregates for high-performance concrete

The exploitation of the phosphate mine of Benguerir generates the production of a very large quantity of unused products, called waste rocks. These materials are today stockpiled in the vicinity of the mine in two imposing mounds or heaps whose total volume is around 15 million of m³… These two heaps contain an important proportion of different rock who could a priori provide aggregates for concrete of different qualities subject to check their suitability for this use. It is therefore important to study the feasibility of their valorization, in both the technologic level and scientific level. The study aims to select and reclaim the most interesting facies, produce aggregates and characterize their physical and chemical properties, optimize the proportioning of the mixtures and study their properties and their durability. In certain measures, the valorization of the heaps will reduce the global environmental footprint of the mine, but also preserve the natural gravel, who are still almost exclusively used for the production of concretes in Morocco.
