The Effect of War on Educational Institutions of Eastern Tigray Zone, Tigray State, Ethiopia.

Résumé

Abstract The objective of this study was to assess the effect of war on school damages in the Eastern Tigrai zone. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods, such as questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, and observation used for data collection. Simple random sampling was used to select the participants. The study indicated 82.6 percent of the household respondent believes the effect of war on school destruction is high to very high. Based on the field observation of randomly selected schools 57.1 percent and 42.9 percent of schools are severely and completely damaged respectively. The study employed a linear regression model the result depicts statistically significant and war explains 84.6 percent of the observed change in school damage. The destruction of schools resulted in 50.3 percent of students being unable to attend their elementary school and the radius of walking distances to elementary and secondary schools increased from 2.2 km to 4.84 km and 6.3 km to 18.22 km respectively. The destruction of schools has resulted from the total collapse of the educational system in the Eastern Tigrai zone. The study will be helpful for the establishment to take suitable steps in the restoration process.
