The Dynamics of Emerging Urban Centers and Territorial Development in the Kart Plain (Driouch Province): A GIS-Based Applied Study of Midar and Ben Taieb

This study explores the dynamics of emerging urban centers and their role in territorial development within the Kart Plain (Driouch Province), focusing on the cases of Midar and Ben Taieb. These urban centers have undergone significant spatial transformations that have reshaped the urban landscape at both the local and regional levels. The research investigates the factors that have contributed to the emergence and development of these urban centers, as well as the spatial implications of their urbanization. Key questions addressed include: How do these centers contribute to the structuring of their local environment? To what extent are they independent from major cities on both regional and national scales? What management mechanisms are currently in place, and what alternative strategies could be implemented? How can Geographic Information Systems (GIS) be effectively integrated into the management and planning of these emerging centers? The emergence and growth of Midar and Ben Taieb can be traced back to the colonial period when spatial organization was structured around administrative institutions, military centers, and weekly markets. Following independence, several factors accelerated their urban dynamics, including demographic growth, international migration, improved living standards, and their designation as urban municipalities. However, despite these developments, the expansion of these centers has not been accompanied by a proportional enhancement of infrastructure and public services, leading to an unbalanced urban expansion. The spatial disparities affecting Midar and Ben Taieb are the result of several challenges, primarily the absence of comprehensive development strategies, despite occasional institutional interventions. As the state aims to leverage these emerging centers to mitigate spatial disparities between major cities and rural areas, it is crucial to adopt more effective and sustainable urban development strategies that align with local realities.
