Impact of Livestock Theft on the Welfare of Smallholder Livestock Farmers in Nyandeni Local Municipality, Eastern Cape Province

Livestock farming is crucial in sub-Saharan Africa, providing high-quality food and economic benefits. In South Africa, however, smallholder livestock farmers face challenges such as stock theft and limited technology, which impact their livelihoods and cause financial losses. Hence, the study sought to investigate the economic effect of livestock theft on the welfare of smallholder livestock farmers in Nyandeni Local Municipality, South Africa. The study used primary data and purposive sampling to collect data from 140 livestock farmers. The study made use of structured questionnaires, which were self-administered by enumerators. Descriptive statistics and linear regression were used for analysis. The results showed that smallholder farmers are typically male, aged 55 on average, with families of five. Smallholder livestock farmers use community grazing for their livestock, which is open to anyone in the community. Livestock farming positively contributes to household welfare, but stock theft exacerbates financial difficulties. The study found that factors like the farmer's age and livestock theft increase financial risks, while education and access to extension services have positive effects. The study recommends establishing community police forums, increasing police presence in rural areas, and investing in security technologies like tracking devices to combat stock theft and support farmers.
