Corollary of Lactobacillus Fermented Cocoyam Peel on the Body Mass Indices of Rats

Article scientifique 2026 Autre

Résumé

The increasing prevalence of malnourished birds in poultry farms necessitates exploration of cost-effective interventions. Cocoyam peel, a waste product, is rich in nutrients but underutilized. While Lactobacillus fermentation enhances nutritional value, its impact on body mass indices (BMI) remains unclear, leaving a gap in understanding its effects on body growth management, creating a need to investigate Lactobacillus fermented cocoyam peel's potential in modulating body mass indices in rats. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of lactobacillus fermented cocoyam peel on body mass indices of rats. The fermenter was isolated and characterized using standard microbiological techniques. The effects of the fermented feeds on the rats were determined using in vivo techniques. The study revealed significant (p < 0.05) increase in body weights of those rats fed with feed augmented with processed cocoyam peel fermented with Lactobacillus acidophilus strain DSN20079 (LADSM) compared to the control group. The test group also recorded higher BMI than the control group, and these values were less than 68 g/cm2, showing healthy growth management among the test and control groups. Therefore, this study has revealed that fermented cocoyam peel as a feed additive, positively influenced the growth, body weights and BMI in Albino Wistar rats.
