Factors Influencing Motivation to Pursue Postgraduate Studies Among Graduates of Basic Medical Sciences in Bauchi, Nigeria

Background: Basic Medical Sciences are the foundation by which medical education is built on. Some of the programs under the medical sciences comprises of Anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and Biochemistry. Generally, graduates from Basic Medical Sciences are equipped with the knowledge to train medical professionals and conduct scientific medical researches that can improve healthcare system in a country. Undergraduate Students of these programs are facing inferiority complex due to lack or narrow prospects in these fields of study. The chances for wider prospects in these fields are only available if postgraduates’ degrees are added to their first degrees. Objectives: This study aimed at assessing if final year and graduates of basic medical sciences are motivated by training, they undertook during their undergraduate’s studies to further obtain higher degrees in their disciplines. Method: The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and the location of the study was Gadau town in Itas/Gadau Local government area of Bauchi state Nigeria. The population of the study was graduates and final year students of anatomy pharmacology, physiology and public health of Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi State Nigeria. The sample size was about 154 students from across four departments listed above. The questionnaire was shared to the students by creating a google form and the subject assessed the forms through the links made available to them. Only 148 students successfully filled the questionnaire. SPSS version 22.0 was used to analyze the data. Data was expressed and presented in tables. The P value of <0.005 was considered significant. Results: Among the eight factors considered in this studies to assess their impact on motivation to pursue postgraduate studies in this studies, only the decision to change the course of study by the students showed statistically significant (p<0.005) effects on the motivation for pursuing higher degrees among the students of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi.
