The Crisis in Mission: Postcolonial and Decolonial Challenges
Résumé
Engaging mission in the present world is to understand that decolonialism and postcolonialism have an immense effect on the evaluation of mission nowadays. Due to colonialism and the close link between mission and colonialism from a decolonial perspective, serious questions about mission are asked. Mission is regarded as positive towards colonialism and has a link to colonialism that it should be rejected in many instances. Not only the way in which the missionaries performed their task, but additionally the conclusions of the missionary endeavour lead to these new understandings. One has to engage this from the perspective of the Holy Bible. It is very clear that even the apostle Paul had to engage the cultures and the world views of the people to whom he proclaimed the Gospel. In that sense, one has to understand that the Gospel is relevant for Paul’s world view. One also has to take into account that he engaged communities from this perspective of the truth of the Gospel. From the perspectives of decolonialism and postcolonialism, the challenge is: How does the Gospel of Jesus Christ change communities and is it beneficial to them? However, one has to explain that the Gospel of Jesus Christ in mission is still very relevant for our present day. A comprehensive literature study from the perspective of missiology is presented.
