Translanguaging and Accommodation Practices Among Educated Sudanese Youth in Cairo

This paper examines how educated Sudanese youth in Cairo navigate identity, belonging, and integration through their use of Sudanese Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, and English.Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews, it analyzes accommodation strategies and translanguaging as mobilization of the linguistic repertoire.Interlocutor accounts indicate that (non)accommodation can be linked to spatiotemporal contexts (past, present, and imagined futures) while translanguaging enables both pragmatic communication and discursive self-positioning.By centering interlocutors' accounts, the study challenges monolithic views of language as bounded, emphasizing the creativity and criticality of multilingual practice, and contributing to research on migration, identity, and displaced Sudanese communities.
