Queer leadership in institutions of higher learning within selected Southern African countries: a systematic protocol

Article scientifique 2026 Anglais

Résumé

Introduction Queer leadership in institutions of higher learning within Sub-Saharan Africa remains an underexplored area despite growing efforts to advance inclusion and equity in higher education. This systematic review protocol examines the experiences, challenges, and strategies of LGBTQI+ leaders who navigate leadership roles within sociocultural, legal, and institutional contexts that often present significant barriers to representation and participation. Methods and analysis The protocol follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) 2020 guidelines. Multiple global and regional databases will be searched with language restrictions and will apply rigorous selection criteria to identify studies focused on the Sub-Saharan region. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) will be used to assess study quality, and data will be synthesized using meta-analysis or narrative synthesis depending on heterogeneity levels. Results The review identified 131 records, of which only one study met the inclusion criteria after screening and eligibility assessment. The findings reveal a significant scarcity of empirical research on queer leadership in higher education institutions across the selected Southern African countries. Discussion The limited evidence highlights a substantial knowledge gap regarding the experiences and representation of queer leaders in higher education within the region. This underscores the need for further research to inform inclusive leadership policies and promote LGBTQI+ representation in academic leadership structures. Systematic Review Registration PROSPERO CRD42024623345.
