Visual Assessment Approach for the Seismic Vulnerability of a Historical Building with Unreinforced Masonry in Tangier - Morocco

Article scientifique 2022 Anglais

Résumé

Abstract The collapse of unreinforced masonry structures, which are spread throughout the world's seismic zones, is the main cause of casualties during seismic disasters. Thousands of accidents and casualties occur every year due to lack of data in construction and maintenance of structures. Although Tangier was considered to be free from seismic threats, it's now realized that this city cannot be considered a seismic safe country because of the recent events that have taken place on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 when an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale was recorded in the northern region, what prompts to anticipate the risk of the old districts of the city where most of the buildings are constructed without taking into consideration the seismic regulations. Hence there is the necessity to assess the seismic resistance adequacy of those existing masonry structures. For this purpose, visual inspection, field experiments, and numerical analysis of the Perdicaris Castle in Tangier of were conducted, all with the goal to assess the state of the existing structure which represents a historical monument of this northern city.
