Primary Delusional Infestation in a Middle Aged Woman in Nigeria- a Case Report

Résumé

A Case report of a middle aged divorced woman is presented here. She complained of intense itching on her skin which she strongly believed is due to infestation by insects. She has gone from one doctor to another seeking for solution. She has also scratched her skin with sharp objects in response to the perceived itching sensation. Clinical and laboratory investigations for possible causes all yielded negative results. There were no history suggestive of cocaine or alcohol use, no history suggestive of stroke, head injury or thyroid disease. Her mental functioning was otherwise normal except for this strongly held belief about being infested by insects. Laboratory investigations i.e HIV screening, VDRL, Manteaux test, Fasting blood sugar were all negative. Conclusion. This conforms with a rare case of primary delusional infestation.
