Solar drying kinetics for faecal sludge: preliminary comparison of UD, VIP and Activated sludge
Résumé
Solar drying could supplement heat for drying purposes and reduce sludge treatment operating costs. This is because it involves the use of solar energy which is an abundant and free source of energy in the world. Solar energy is also environmentally friendly, renewable, and yet offers an added advantage of killing the pathogens in the sludge by the high temperatures involved. Currently, the use of solar energy in FS drying is not widely practiced and there is hardly any literature to guide or aid in the design of solar drying processes for FS. The aim of this work was therefore to study and characterize FS solar drying through a laboratory-scale apparatus operating using sludge from different sources. An analysis of the drying kinetics as a function of various operating parameters in order to find the optimal conditions for FS solar drying was carried out as well as an investigation into the structural changes of faecal sludge during the drying process.
