A Modernized Trainer for Improved Embedded Systems Teaching and Learning

Article scientifique 2026 Anglais

Résumé

This research introduces a modernized trainer for improved teaching and learning of embedded systems. Embedded systems underpin a wide range of modern technologies, from consumer electronics to industrial automation and the Internet of Things (IoT). Despite their ubiquity, a persistent challenge in engineering education is the lack of comprehensive hands-on training platforms that effectively bridge theoretical instruction with real-world implementation. Existing embedded system trainers are often limited to single-board architectures or narrow functionalities, leaving learners with fragmented exposure to diverse embedded technologies. This research addresses this gap by proposing a modularized embedded system trainer that integrates multiple microcontroller and microprocessor platforms—specifically Arduino Uno, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi 4—into a single scalable unit. The methodology includes modular hardware design, sensor and actuator integration, communication interfaces, display units, and software development using Python, C/C++, and Arduino IDE. Pre-implementation validation was carried out using Proteus VSM and EasyEDA, followed by iterative prototyping and real-time testing. Key findings show that the trainer supports a wide array of laboratory exercises, from fundamental digital I/O to advanced IoT applications with wireless connectivity and RTOS integration. The onboard Raspberry Pi enables standalone operation, eliminating reliance on external computers, while expansion ports support future scalability. The proposed trainer provides a cost-effective, versatile, and industry-aligned educational platform. Beyond the classroom, its modular architecture makes it valuable for practical domains such as home automation, industrial control, robotics, smart agriculture, environmental monitoring, and IoT innovation.
