Effects of selected herbicides on the performance of rhizobia strain-inoculated soybean in Tanzania

We evaluated the effects of herbicides on the functions and survival of rhizobia strains for the performance of soybeans. Three herbicides were selected as glyphosate (coded as H3), S-Metolachlor (coded as H2), and Thiobencarb + Propanil (coded as H1). The H1, H2, and H3 applied at concentrations of 10 ml/L, 15 ml/L, and 10 ml/L, respectively. The experiment was replicated three times using a randomized complete block design. Pieces of PVC were prepared whereas soybean seeds inoculated with rhizobial strains were sown and weeds’ seeds allowed to grow for treatment (herbicides) application. The number of leaves per plant, plant height (cm), fresh nodule weight (g), shoot fresh weight (g), and number of effective nodules per plant were recorded after the treatment application to compare the survival of rhizobial strains and plants’ performance under the use of herbicides. Ultimately, the mean heights were 6 cm, 11.5 cm, 14 cm, and 35 cm for H1, H2, H3, and untreated soybeans, respectively, differing significantly ( p < 0.05). Soybean plants inoculated with negative rhizobia strains bared more nodules under treatment of control (42), H1 (3), H2 (4), and H3 (15) compared to the soybean plants inoculated by positive rhizobia strains under treatment of H1, H2, H3, and control with nodules numbering 25, 0, 0, and 5, respectively ( p < 0.05). Positive and negative rhizobia strains are both positively and linearly associated with the herbicides’ use in the score of plant fresh weight (g) and nodules’ count per plant. Therefore, herbicides might have little effect on negative-strain rhizobia-inoculated soybeans, yet they manage to control weeds. Further research needed before findings recommended for use, as this study conducted in only one season and at one location.
