Walkability and multimodality for a Sustainable city in Algeria: Case of University Students in Algiers

This Thesis examines the relationship between walkability and multimodality in urban student mobility, with a focus on college students in Algiers, Algeria. Through a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes pedestrian routes (PR) linking public transport hubs to university campuses, as well as four public transport stations (PTS) and the primary transport modes used by students. The data collection process comprised two comprehensive questionnaires distributed to students, interviews with both students and public transport workers, physical analysis and in-situ observations. The findings highlight key barriers faced by students, including poor pedestrian infrastructure, crowded and unreliable public transportation, and high levels of safety concerns. Disadvantaged groups, including female students and those with limited resources, are disproportionately affected by these challenges. The study applied a walkability scoring system to classify pedestrian routes and assessed the connectivity of different modes of transport, revealing shortcomings in connectivity and accessibility. This research adds to global debates on sustainable urban transport by examining unique walkability and multimodality problems. This research offers practical recommendations for enhancing pedestrian facilities, ensuring multimodal transport is more dependable, and improving safety and accessibility. By encouraging a transport environment favorable to students, this research hopes to improve commuting conditions and overall quality of life for university students in the context of emerging urban environments.
