Determinants of the Barriers Preventing Smallholder Farmers from Adopting Conservation Agriculture in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Conservation Agriculture (CA) offers significant potential for enhancing agricultural sustainability and productivity among smallholder farmers. Despite its benefits, the adoption of CA remains constrained by several barriers. This study investigates the key challenges hindering smallholder farmers in Hazyview from adopting CA practices. Using a random sampling technique, data were collected from 221 registered smallholder farmers through structured questionnaires. The analysis utilised descriptive statistics, including percentages and means, to evaluate the severity of the barriers. Results indicate that limited input availability, restricted information access, and insufficient financial resources are the most critical obstacles. To address these barriers, recommendations include improving input accessibility through subsidies and cooperatives, enhancing information dissemination via robust extension services and digital platforms, and facilitating access to affordable credit through microfinance and policy interventions. Addressing these challenges comprehensively can foster greater adoption of CA practices, ultimately improving agricultural sustainability and productivity for smallholder farmers in the region.
