Actor and Character Duality in Nollywood: Identity Negotiation, Typecasting and Cultural Embodiment in Selected Performances of Raji Lawal

Article scientifique 2026 Autre

Résumé

This article examines actor and character duality in Nollywood through a qualitative case study of Raji Lawal, with particular attention to identity negotiation, typecasting, emotional immersion and culturally situated meanings of performance. The expression “dual personality” is used here as a nonclinical performance metaphor for the actor’s simultaneous awareness of personal self and fictional role, rather than as a psychiatric diagnosis. The study draws on a semi structured interview conducted with Lawal in Asaba, Delta State, and a close analysis of four screen performances: Sacred Cowry, Save the Princess, Shakira and Bitter Rain. Interview and film data were interpreted thematically through a framework combining Stanislavski’s emotional truth and dual consciousness, Diderot’s disciplined control, Brecht’s critical distance, Goffman’s dramaturgical account of social identity and Yoruba performance perspectives on ritual and communal embodiment. The findings show that Lawal’s practice is characterised by selective absorption into the role, interpretive expansion of the script and a gradual rather than instantaneous return to everyday identity. Repeated antagonist casting generated professional visibility while also producing a durable public image that constrained his perceived artistic range. The selected films reveal distinct modes of duality: ritualised authority in Sacred Cowry, intensified villain identity in Save the Princess, counter typecasting and value congruence in Shakira, and moral ambivalence in Bitter Rain. The article proposes a triadic model in which the actor negotiates among personal self, performed character and a culturally mediated public persona. It concludes that actor and character duality is both a creative resource and an occupational challenge, requiring role diversity, reflective role exit practices and stronger wellbeing support within Nigerian film production and actor training.
