Knowledge and sources of accessing sexual and reproductive health information among visually impaired women in Ghana

Abstract Objective: This study explores the knowledge and sources of information in accessing sexual and reproductive health services and care information among visually impaired women in Ghana. Qualitative data involving In-depth Interviews and Focus Group Discussions were conducted among 21 visually impaired women, selected through purposive and snowballing sampling techniques. Thematic Analysis was used to analyse the data. Results: The study identified fives themes – knowledge, the relevance of accessing SRH services and care information, sources and content of the information as well as barriers to accessing such information. The study showed that visually impaired women were knowledgeable about the relevance of SRH services and care information. However, they had limited knowledge about the group of individuals that uses such services. The source of accessing information was formal and informal. Barriers to accessing information on SRH services and care was the lack of family caregivers and support services. The study recommends that current policies and programmes on SRH services and care should be made inclusive of visually impaired women. The advocacy and awareness campaigns on SRH services and care should educate visually impaired women, communities and family caregivers about services for individual gender groups as well as support services.
