WOMEN BETWEEN SOCIAL CLASSIFICATION AND STIGMA: A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY IN THE ALGERIAN CONTEXT

Article scientifique 2026 Anglais

Résumé

This study falls within the sociological fields concerned with analysing the mechanisms of social classification and their effects on the construction of status and identity. It focuses on the phenomenon of stigma as a symbolic practice that produces stereotypical images affecting the positioning of individuals within the social system. The current study addresses the issue of women's stigmatization through a theoretical approach based on social stigma theory, examining the historical and cultural dimensions that have contributed to the entrenchment of this phenomenon. It reviews some indicative models in Algerian society to understand the contexts in which social meanings associated with women are reformulated. The findings indicate that social stigma necessitates a critical reading of the dominant cultural structures.
